Bridging the Gap: from Lower to Higher Reading Skills

This session introduces how a world language teacher can use technology to assist and enhance reading accuracy and fluency, in order to improve reading comprehension skills. The presenter will share examples on how context-free and context-based reading fluency contribute to reading comprehension, and demonstrate how to use technology to support the outcome of the local text processing to access the meaning of a larger text. In addition, the presenter will demonstrate the digital books she created with Nanhai Publishing to help support students to improve reading in Mandarin and how interactive media is being used to increase students’ motivation to read, and bridge the gap between lower to higher reading skills.
