We are a dynamic and growing group with members associated with a wide variety of institutions of higher learning in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Everyone interested in the use of technology in the learning of languages and cultures is welcome to participate in MAALLT activities, but the MAALLT region includes: Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

MAALLT Tech Slam 7: VR Ready to Save the World

The Mid-Atlantic Association for Language Learning Technology (MAALLT) is excited to announce our next Tech Slam 7, “VR Ready to Save the World,” to be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 (Earth Day!) on Zoom, from 7:00–8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

The theme for this event is how Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) can be used to teach languages and enhance language learning.

A Tech Slam is similar to a poetry slam, but instead of poetry, it features multiple 5-minute micro-presentations on useful tools, strategies, or practices related to language learning technology. Presenters briefly introduce a tool or practice and explain its value for teachers and learners. The event will conclude with a Q&A session.

Presenters:

  • Duke Gee – See It, Say It, Send It: InfoGap to SITREP
  • Betty Rose Facer – Conversations Reimagined: The Immersive Power of Virtual Reality, AI, and ImmerseMe
  • Iva Youkilis – From Virtual Rooms to Real Communication: Using IKEA AR and Spatial.io for Language Learning
  • Yuki Yoshimura – QAvatars in Your Living Room: Using Quest 3s Mixed Reality for Immersive Language Learning
  • Kevin Richards – Beyond the Screen: Customizing Language Learning with AI-Powered Mixed Reality
  • Valentina Lukin – Can VR Save the World? Affordable Immersive Language Learning
  • Maria Le Mura – More Speaking, Less Silence: How VR Creates Real Language Practice

You do not need to be a MAALLT member or live in the Mid-Atlantic region to attend. The live event will be open to the first 100 registrants, and the recording will be shared afterward with MAALLT members who are unable to attend live.

We look forward to seeing you at the event!

Best wishes,
The MAALLT Board
