Consulting
Services Tips
A common misperception (wishful thinking?) is that a consultant
will swoop in with the right solution. In most cases it
is not that easy. Regardless of who forges the plan, your input
and involvement will carry it forward and ensure its success. Taking
a few steps in this direction will help:
BEFORE HIRING A CONSULTANT
REFLECT
Be able to articulate what you want
-- a needs assessment can help shape decisions
Brainstorm
-- what can't you do that you wish you could?
-- what do you want to preserve?
CONNECT
Contact professional organizations
-- ( IALLT & IALLT
affiliates)
Connect with your regional lab group
-- ( IALLT Regional
Groups)
Join a mailing list which addresses issues you face
-- (LLTI)
EXPLORE
Check the IALLT web site for useful links
Look at language lab web sites
Check the IALLT showcase
-- especially the lab tours (free with your membership!)
Visit other labs in person
-- contact your regional leader or visit the regional web site
Exploit available resources
-- ( IALLT Publications)
COLLABORATE
Build relationships with departments and offices on your campus:
Information Technology, Library, Media Services, Foreign Languages,
the Music program, English as a Foriegn Language program, the Development Office, Alumni Giving, etc.
PLAN, PLAN, PLAN, PLAN!
If you are planning a lab, set a realistic timetable for the planning process.
