Ursula Williams Graduate
Student Conference Grant
Interested candidates should read the below information and then
proceed to the online submission form.
Purpose and Value
The grant is for the express purpose of assisting worthy candidates
to attend the IALLT biennial conference and may not be put to any
other use. The grant is intended to encourage the recipient(s) to
become more familiar with the profession by engaging with their
colleagues at the conference. It is named for someone who captured
the spirit of IALLT over many active years, as one of our most energetic,
committed, and convivial members. Ursula Williams was the long-term
coordinator of the language resource center at Notre Dame University,
and would have become President of IALLT in 2005.
Up to three scholarships with a maximum value of $500 each will
be awarded, depending on the availability of funds. Qualifying expenses
include travel to, and registration at the conference; any remaining
amount up to the maximum value awarded may then be applied towards
conference accommodation. It is preferred that payment be made against
original invoices directly to the source, however, on presentation
of original receipts IALLT may reimburse the individual recipient.
Candidates
All Graduate Students sufficiently advanced in their postgraduate
work to have a demonstrated commitment to supporting, researching
or practicing the use of technology in second language acquisition
are eligible to apply.
Process
Applicants should (1) complete the online application form found
at http://www.iallt.org, and (2) arrange for two (2) letters of
support from persons with permanent university or equivalent positions
who are qualified to evaluate the applicant’s suitability
for the award. Letters of recommendation are to reach the IALLT
Secretary by the same specified deadline as the application. Adjudication
will be made by the IALLT Board or their nominees, and the results
announced to applicants within one calendar month of the submission
deadline. The submission deadline is January 31, 2009.
Criteria
In a document of not more than 500 words, applicants must express
their interest, and outline their previous study and experience
as it relates to the criteria. These include, but may not be limited
to, activities as developers, teachers or administrators of technologies
which are used to support the acquisition of second languages. Applicants
should demonstrate financial need in the form of a simple written
statement.
Applicants must be student members of IALLT, or agree to become
student members via conference registration at the non-member rate.
It is expected the successful candidate(s) will submit a proposal
to the IALLT Conference Program Committee for delivery of some type
of formal presentation at the conference (see the deadline for conference
proposal submission), or submit an article to the IALLT Journal
for publication consideration within two months of the conference.
The Board reserves the right to publicize the successful applicants’
names in appropriate publications.
Sources of Funding
IALLT will seek ongoing corporate support for these grants. Individuals
(member or non-member of IALLT) are also encouraged to make donations
towards the fund. IALLT is a registered tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) organization,
and as such, donations are tax deductible to the extent of the law.
